Provide feature to allow Coordinators to mark Discussions threads as 'Answered'

description

Provide a feature similar to what is seen in the MSDN Forums whereby discussions moderators (in this case Coordinators) can mark threads as being 'Answered'. Inside an answered thread, the actual post which represents the answer would be marked as the one which gives the answer (see attached screenshots).

I propose that instead of being able to mark a post as "answered", mark it as "useful". That way this feature can be used for questions and general discussions. Unless of course CodePlex adds a way to mark an entire thread as a question so that the term "answered" actually applies (aside from tagging - something more obvious and built-in, like a question mark icon).

Do we want the conversation to be locked after it is marked as answered?

If so we could have a "Closed" state which locks the discussion to anyone who isn't a co-ordinator or above and then making it very easy to filter out the closed discussions from your view of discussions? That could help in the cases of "answered" but also "locked"

That said - there is some value in keeping the discussion open after it has been marked as answered so I'm open for having that be a separate thing to locked/closed, just interested in what folks here think.

Martin.

What I want to propose here is that we give the ability for project contributors or the original poster to mark any item in a thread as an answer. The same people can unmark as answer. Also provide a view as to which discussion threads have answers and filter by unanswered.

Make sense?

So - we just added "mark as answer". Can you let me know what you think?

Thanks,

Martin.

Great! A couple of feedback items/questions:
  1. The first post in a discussion shouldn't have the option enabled.
  2. The option should be a bigger IMHO. Otherwise, it will be hard to notice it's there.
  3. Are answers automatically moved to the top? Could they be?
  4. Does it make sense to be able to mark multiple posts as answers?
Nevertheless, this is a big step forward.

Thanks Dan, BTW you win the prize for first tweet about the feature ;-)

We deliberately made it work for the first post because I've sometime seen people edit their initial post to make it the answer as well so I figured we might as well allow it and get some stats about how often that really happens from live usage.

Looking to refresh the UI of discussions in general so we'll look to make it bigger then

Answered are kept inline - I actually am not that keen on systems that move it up to the top as often the answer doesn't make complete sense out of context with the rest of the thread. However we should definitely make it easier to navigate to the answer

The "multiple posts as answer" thing was deliberate as well because I've seen that behaviour a lot on MSDN forums and be useful. Rather than restrict to 1 answer I figured we might as well make it super easy to flag/unflag as an answer and let project contributors / original poster decide.

I could well be wrong on all of these decisions though ;-) Looking forward to the feedback on this first iteration. Let me know how it goes after you've used it for a few days and see if you have any stronger opinions about this initial version of it.

My main goal was to make something that was usable and lightweight to begin with then see how it got used in the real world.

Great feature, thanks Martin.

I'd like to be able to 'roll it out' now, i.e. i have hundreds of discussion posts, the filter is currently useless to me. I'd like to be able to easily mark existing discussions as answered (maybe not the particular answer, but at least the discussion as a whole). Let me search by date or topic of text and let me just select all, mark as answered. That way I can then easily keep on top of stuff that is happening now (or recent) and the filter button makes more sense.

Cheers

Mike

Yeah, that's a good point. Let me think about that.
