How to Manually Update an animation

I'd like to manually update the dwarfanimator with my own timekey. So that it no longer automatically updates as a game component when the game object calls the update method. I've noticed that I can stop it from automatically updating by setting

AnimationController.Enabled = false;

However, I don't know how to manually update the animation controller to the next appropriate frame. I'd appreciate any help on the topic. Thanks.
