Request for Revised Activity Statistics

This request is for the separation of the "Activity" statistics into two distinct categories:
  • Public Activity
  • Project Activity
Each of the Page Views, Visits and Pages Per Visit statistics could have two values, one in each category.

Benefits for Users:

This way users can sort the Project Directory by activity related to the maintenance of projects or by the actual Popularity of them.

Statistical values in both of the categories could be used to calculate Popularity in the Project Directory, however, public activity could factor in more.

Benefits for Coordinators:

Separating the "Activity" statistics that appear on project home pages into these two categories could be useful. Viewing a home page after a week's worth of editing, uploading and reviewing corrupts the statistics so they no longer have any real value. For instance, some coordinators probably care about seeing statistics for public activity more than their own activity, but having them aggregated makes the statistics uninteresting.

Separating the statistics would allow coordinators to monitor the activity of the team as well, distinct from the public activity statistics.

Since this work item was entered we have gone away from activity and we are now explicit about page views etc.

My understanding of "popularity" is that it's not just public activity, but also includes activity of the team, with the same weight as that of the public. In other words, 1000 page hits from me in my own project factors into the popularity statistics as 1000 page hits.

What I mean by "separation" is removing "private" activity (I called it "project" activity) as a factor for popularity, and having it aggregated in its own, separate statistical categories.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough, but unless my understanding of this is wrong, this feature request shouldn't be closed.

We do this already. Public activity is what we consider to be popularity. Project Activity is exactly what you describe.

A request that I have seen is make these numbers visible on the project home page in addition to where they are already visible in the project directory.

He is asking for more granularity in our statistics, specifically those provided to us by WebTrends.

I still don't think that all of my concerns were addressed by the change from activity to explicit page views, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

One of the main purposes of this work item, however unclear it may be, is for a coordinator to have the ability to work freely on wiki pages, check the releases page and source code tab, and now the stats tab, to gather statistical information, all without affecting the "public" activity statistics.

i.e., If an anonymous user views a wiki, or any tab on my project, I want that to count as a visit. If I, the coordinator, do the same, I do not want it to count as a visit (while I'm logged in). Has this already been implemented?
