I just find the web site a little slow

description

I just notice that the web site is not the fastest; it takes few seconds to go from one tab to another within a project. I tried different browsers, at home and at work and different hours, in general the performance is not good. I am at Dublin, Ireland and I have a 2Mb DSL line; I normally see my download rate to be around 100Kb/sec but a download from the web site is only 20-25Kb/sec.

I reported this problem 3 months ago and still the web site is not performing. I am based in Ireland and I have tried from different locations. The performance is not good in many areas:- Browsing projects going from tab to tab the response is quite bad- Downloading files the speed is 4 times slower than the speed for other web sites with the same connection- Timeouts browsing is not rare

I suggest to investigate this problem and take some action. The SourgeForce.Net web site performs a lot better than CodePlex and that is not good news for MS.

Thanks

I second ealbert's comment. It is rather slow. Especially browsing discussion list and work items.

It is now more than one year since I reported the problem and there has not been any changes re this issue. The web site is very slow.

I have included some YSlow stats from the Codeplex/SQLRunner home page

I agree with you. This needs top priority. Still, the stats you included probably only analyze situation on client side. I think that most of the problem resides on server-side. But not sure. Only the CodePlex team knows for sure what it looks like there.

Can we get some response from the CodePlex team on this issue? Leaving no response one starts to speculate... CodePlex thinks this site is performing well? CodePlex knows this is a major problem, but will not be able to fix?
I read about more and more nifty features being added, but I never get to the point where I try them out, simply because I can't wait for the pages to load.

Performance has never been amazing, but for the past several months, it's been decent. Then last week it suddenly became terrible. What happened? :(

This issue is most likely caused by the BrightAds service. If the project owner has opted to place ads on their site, the server needs to make a request to BrightAds prior to rendering the page. I had this problem on my page, and thought I might have misconfigured my BrightAds account (it wasn't rendering any ads). When I emailed support about the issue, they informed me that the BrightAds service is no longer available (hence why it takes so long to resolve an ad request).

Hi Steve -

The Bright Ads service is no longer available.
You should have received an e-mail notification regarding this.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Thank you,
Adrienne

Discussion forums are impractically slow. Codeplex is the only site that behaves this way. 15-20 seconds between the time I click a project forum discussion thread, and the time it renders in my browser. 15-20 seconds between the time I click the "home" link and the time the page is rendered. In comparison, StackOverflow.com is instant. If the slowness is because of BrightAds, then I would like to know how to turn it off. (brightAds is no longer a checkbox on the "Edit Project Summary and Details" page.

It is troubling that there is not a single response from the CodePlex team on this workitem.

Yesterday the site was out for much of the morning. That is a totally separate issue.

a little further analysis.
I used Firefox, unauthenticated, and the response is instant. Not sure if it is because I am unauthenticated, or because it is Firefox. I clicked a link in IE, then went to firefox, and clicked the same link. IE was blank, and firefox showed it instantly. Then I clicked around the site, and still, instant response.

I turned on Fiddler2 during an IE click sequence with Codeplex. Clicking on a discussion thread resulted in 6 distinct HTTP requests : #1 to webtrends, #2 to the thread in codeplex, #3 to the image server (i3.codeplex.com), #4 to codeplex for the tiny_mce.js script, #5 to microsoftsto.112.2o7.net (??) and then #6 to webtrends. Each individual HTTP transaction is fast, but in IE, there is a 15-second delay between #4 and #5. What is that all about?
